Walterre – The bird watching lodge in the foothills of the Himalayas in India.
Located just 8 km north of the famous garrison town (and now a capital of Uttarakhand) of Dehradun, Walterre is a retreat in the true sense, at once elegant and discreet, with some of the world’s most gorgeous mountain views. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded in and around Walterre.
The well maintained and carefully and selectively planted gardens and fruit orchards attract a variety of birds and butterflies, only adding to the natural charm of this quaint yet elegant cottage. In fact, the elusive Nepal Cupwing (also called Nepal Wren-babbler) was first found in India in its garden. Five species of sunbirds are also found regularly feeding in the garden. Three types of forktails are seen in the river at the bottom of the resort, which is also home to birds like Brown Dipper and Plumbeous Water Redstart.
The boutique birding lodge depicts elegance, grace and beauty. The villa has four luxurious bedrooms, where the mood is stylish and leisurely. Flush with modern amenities, a well-stocked library, and views that would make most big resorts jealous, this boutique bungalow is the perfect example of the term “good things come in small packages”.

This is the best stay I have ever experienced and it’s much more awesome than I expected it to be. As soon as we entered the compound we were greeted by the chirping of birds. We were awestruck by the grandeur and theme of this bungalow. The rooms were just an art itself. The interiors just filled us with pleasure as we just looked at the items, collection, lithographs. I enjoyed each moment staying at this place.
