Rio de Janeiro is a state in the South East of Brazil.The State of Rio de Janeiro has much to offer the visiting birder from the coastal Restinga to the high altitude peaks of the Atlantic rainforest rising to a rugged and impressive 2,400 metres. The vast range in altitude is reflected in the high number of bird species one can encounter within the State. The State has in excess of 750 species, with over 100 endemics. Most of these endemics are to be found in the Atlantic forest.
On this tour we will discover the beauties, colors and all the biodiversity that the Atlantic Forest reserves for us!

Today we will welcome our guests at the international airport of Rio de Janeiro and head to our home, where our visitors can rest from the long journey.
An easy-walk hiking trail in a friendly place in order to see the birds of the “Restinga” ecosystem, and also a visit to the newly opened Birding Tower. In addition to the birds, we can also observe caimans and capybaras. In the afternoon we will offer tours on some wild beaches in Rio. For those not willing to beach-going, staying in the hotel will be an option, with the possibility of observation of some birds at the hotel area.

Located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, with access to the city’s northern, southern and western zones, Tijuca National Park protects the largest urban forest in the world with an area of 3,953 hectares of the Atlantic Forest. As a result of one of the most successful reforestation projects in Brazil, the PNT forests are now home to a wide variety of endemic species of the Atlantic Forest.
Key Species: Frilled Coquette, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, White-necked Hawk, Saffron Toucanet, Crescent-chested Puffbird, including endangered birds likes White-browed Woodpecker, Ochre-marked Parakeet and Maroon-faced Parakeet.

Jardim Botânico do Rio is the oldest Botanical Garden in Brazil, with more than 200 years of history. Occupying an area of 540,000 square meters, the Garden has more than 3,400 species of different plants, coming from different regions of the world, making this area a true paradise for birds, which use the arboretum as a place of feeding, breeding and nesting.
Key Species: Channel-billed Toucan, Green-headed Tanager, Red-necked Tanager, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, Orange-bellied Euphonia, Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Jandaya Parakeet, Red-shouldered Macaw, Plain Parakeet, Striated Heron.

For birdwatchers, one remarkable attraction on the park is a hanging jetty with more than 1km long. From there, the birdwatcher can observe the middle layer of the forest at eye level. The landscape is dominated by native bamboo and there are still several juara palm trees. It is a great place to observe typical species of the mountain forest, especially birds that eat bamboo leaves.
Key Species: Rufous-backed Antvireo, Brassy-brested Tanager, Pin-tailed Manakin, Brazilian Ruby, Brown Tanager, Salvadori’s Antwren, Black-cheeked Gnateater and Buff-bellied Puffbird.

After breakfast we’ll drive back to the city and head to the inn Cantinho das Garças, where we will spend two more nights. In the afternoon the group will be free to choose its individual activities, we will stay around for questions and/or inquiries.
A pleasant walk, overlooking the sea, by the foothill of Sugarloaf. Therein we’ll probably be watching great sightings of Brazilian tanagers through an easy walking path. After bird watching we go up to the famous Sugar Loaf, for beautiful views of the entire city.
